TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

It is Teacher Appreciation Week! We love our teachers so much. In the last few years they have adapted to new technologies, taught through a pandemic, and dealt with a school fire. Their example of resiliency and dedication to our students and culture at Highland is inspiring. This week we take to recognize and honor them. Teachers, we thank you for all you do. There is no way to measure your impact or your reach in the lives of others. A teacher is someone we continue to reflect on throughout our life and what we learned from them. Thank you! Thank you for your lessons of reading, writing and arithmetic, but your lessons about what it means to be a good person, a good citizen, and about life. Thank you for your kindness and example. You inspire us to do better and be better. Thank you...We love and appreciate you!

SHOSHONE-BANNOCK TRIBAL YOUTH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: STUDENT RECOGNITION

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Youth Education Department along with Highland High School are recognizing 48 Native American Students at Highland for success in academics and/or attendance for the first and second trimesters of the 2023-24 school year. HIGHLAND DRAMA STUDENTS-PATTY DUKE & JIMMY AWARDS

Huge Congratulations to Highland Drama Patty Duke Award Winners for their performance in Legally Blonde the Musical. Patty Duke Awards recognize excellence nationwide among High School Theater Performance with the highest award called the Jimmy Award. It is similar to the Grammys or Oscars. Those who win the Jimmy Award then have the opportunity to go to New York. Highland was recognized more than any other high school in Idaho. Patty Duke Award Winners and Jimmy Award Finalists from Highland include:

• Best performance by an ensemble.
• Best actresses in a lead role-Hope Bradford & Payton Carter.
• Best Scene Design-Dee Tucker.
• Best Costume Design-Lydia Knapp.
• Jimmy Award Finalists-Hope Bradford & Payton Carter. 

This is an outstanding recognition! Great job Highland Drama!

HIGHLAND DRAMA PERFORMANCES

Highland Drama is wrapping up their final 2 performances of  The Complete Works of William Shakespeare tonight and tomorrow at 7pm. Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students.

Next Tuesday 5/14/24 they begin their final performance of the year, SIX, the Musical. SIX Is a musical comedy in the style of a pop concert. It is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII.

NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY GRADUATION & HIGHEST HONORS LUNCHEON

Graduates that are part of National Honors Society have a mandatory meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 5/7/24, at lunch in Mrs. Plato's room, room B18. NHS Graduation is Monday, May 13th at 7pm in the Highland Auditorium. At graduation, NHS graduates will receive their stoles and cords to be worn at graduation. On Wednesday, May 15th at 12:30pm in the Media Center, Highest Honors students will be recognized with a lunch and receive their medallion to be worn at graduation from Highland Administration. The luncheon is for students only.

HIGHLAND PROM/SPIRIT WEEK

CHAMPIONS ASSEMBLY WEDNESDAY 5/8/24

On Wednesday 5/8/24, as part of PROM/SPIRIT Week we will be recognizing our champions from the school year in an assembly at Highland Stadium at 10:30am. We are excited to join together for this event. Make sure and dress warm just in case of spring weather.

HIGHLAND PROM-MAY 11th at ISU STUDENT UNION BALLROOM

Highland Prom is this Saturday, May 11th from 8pm-11pm at the ISU Ballroom in the Student Union Building. The Student Union parking lot will be tore up for reconstruction. Students can park anywhere around the Student Union in designated parking spaces. Prom tickets are now on sale in the Bursar’s Office. Tickets are $25 per person or $50 per couple. They will be $30 per person at the door. Students if you are taking a date that is not from Highland, Poky, or Century, you will need to pick up an out of town guest form from the office.

Highland Varsity Baseball is hosting the district championship Tuesday 5/7/24 at Westmark Field at 4pm. 

Highland Track & Field attend districts  May 9th & 10th at Rigby High School.

Highland Tennis is hosting districts on May 8th & 10th at Capell Park. 

Highland Softball has their district tournament on May 7th at Thunder Ridge High School. 

Good luck to all our teams at districts this week. 

All girls interested in joining the all girls wrestling team for the 2024-25 school year, there is a meeting on Monday, May 13th, at lunch in Room C27.

Highland Students and Families,

We’re getting down to the wire, so please check the blog in the final month of school for information to 1) act on, 2)celebrate, or 3) mull over.

Small-Town; Rural Students (STARS) College Fair: May 21 in Pocatello

Sophomores and juniors, look in your Google classrooms! There is a network of college

admissions counselors who look to recruit students from small / rural towns. Idaho is

fortunate to have a broad array of post-secondary options, but if you are considering

East Coast colleges, private colleges, flagship or research universities in other states,

please MARK YOUR CALENDAR. On Tuesday, May 21st , from 6 to 8:30 pm, at the

Mountain View Event Center in Pocatello, there will be admissions reps from 20

different colleges, including Brown, Barnard, Case Western, Tufts, Rice, University of

Notre Dame, University of Wyoming, and Yale, among others. The STAR network of

counselors is offering a rare opportunity to talk to college staff from these far-flung

colleges and universities. Check it out!

Juniors – Looking Ahead, Think about Scholarships, Financial Aid NOW

Prestigious, national scholarships – some are general; some are directed to certain

populations of students (STEM, first-generation, high-achieving, minority) – are

available (often with lots of money) to high school juniors. But those scholarships have

1) extensive applications, and 2) early deadlines.

Talk to the CCAs before you leave for the summer if you think you might want to pursue

some of these opportunities. We can give you some information, the names of some of

these scholarships, some websites, and some things to consider over the summer

months.

Senior Celebration – Monday, May 20th : Mark Your Calendars !

ALL seniors are hereby invited to be guests of honor at Highland High School’s Senior

Celebration, Monday, May 20th , starting at 8:45 am. We did not have such a celebration

last year because of the fire, but we are happy to revive the tradition for the Class of

2024. Here is the drill:

 Seniors will go directly to Iron Horse Stadium before the first bell. Guests may

arrive at the same time. Seniors will sit on chairs set up on the track, facing the

stands.

 Seniors wear their caps and gowns (it can be windy, so bring items to keep your

mortarboard on your head).

 Unlike graduation day, seniors may sit with their friends.

 Also unlike graduation, seniors may wear appropriate cultural or family items,

regalia, ribbons – such as lei necklaces, tribal stoles or regalia, family medals or

mementos. In addition, students may wear their issued graduation cords

signifying academic honors, STEM designation, or CTE pathway completion.

 Family and friends are happily invited to attend.

 We hope the weather will allow the student body to gather as well. Afterwards,

seniors and families will gather in the small gym for breakfast refreshments,

signing of yearbooks, and many photographs.

Intent to Enroll = Seniors

Planning to attend any college, university, or training program this fall? Please please

please let your college know you Intend to Enroll – for all kinds of important reasons: it

saves your place in a class, you get notified about new-student orientation, you are told

about housing options, and you establish a school account where important information

can be found. On the website of the school you plan to attend, type in “intent to enroll” in

the search bar and do as instructed about your next steps. It is our advice that seniors

make a college or training decision by May 15th .

Bengal Bridge = Seniors

Bengal Bridge is a terrific summer bridge program offered at Idaho State that occurs

over 7 weeks in June and July. Students can earn up to 9 college credits that chip away

at general education requirements at a fraction of the usual per-credit cost. Students

get an important introduction to college, make a soft landing, make friends, become

familiar with campus / staff / resources. Follow the URL below for more information. But

don’t delay; the deadline to apply will close soon. The CCAs can tell you more about

Bengal Bridge if you have any questions.

Know When Your Orientation Is = Seniors

If you plan to attend two or four years of college or training, BE SURE you know when

your new-students orientation is. Some colleges will have orientations throughout the

summer (ISU’s first new-student orientation is May 8!) and some will have a new-

student orientation right before the start of school. In order to make a strong and smooth

transition to college, is it important to fully attend a new-student orientation. Please do

your homework to find out when yours is.

Ordering your College Transcripts for Transfer Credit

If you have earned dual credits during high school, it is important that you send official

transcripts to your college of choice so that those credits can be evaluated and added to

your college transcript.

If you are attending ISU, and you earned dual credit through ISU, they already have

your classes and your grades. If you earned dual credits through ISU, but you are

attending elsewhere, you need to have your ISU transcripts sent for evaluation.

Here’s the deal.

 You will need a credit or debit card.

 You will need to know either your student ID # for the college where you earned

dual credit or you have to know your full Social Security number. Or both.

 You will go the National Clearinghouse, the Transcript section. Look for the

spinning tree. It is a HUGE website, so please follow this URL:

 You want to order and have transcripts sent when grades are posted.

Just visit the CCAs if you have any questions.

Plan to Defer? = Seniors

Some seniors have been accepted to college or training, and plan to attend, but need to

defer because of military enlistment, necessary medical care, or religious service. If

your situation is thus, please inquire about deferral policies. Some colleges / training

programs in Idaho ask you to fill out a simple online form; other Idaho colleges will not

defer and you’ll have to reapply ☹. At any rate, be sure that the college or training

program of your choice knows that you will be deferring your start date. If you are at all

unsure about what is needed, just call the Admissions Office – or stop by and ask the

CCAs.

GRADUATING CLASS OF 2024

Highland Graduates, starting today and running through next Tuesday 5/14 during 3rd period, 11am-12:30pm, a photographer will be available in the library to take your photo in your cap, gown and all your graduation regalia that will be displayed as you cross the stage at graduation. A schedule is posted here below. On Monday we will call down graduates by alphabet. They will have a graduation cap, gown and regalia for you to use if you do not have yours yet. They will not have stoles given by ISU for Associates Degrees, those students who have earned these must bring their own stole for the picture. Please contact Mrs. Pauline Smith (smithpa@sd25.us) for questions. Photos will also be available for purchase through Highland Yearbook. If a student does not get their photo taken, only their name and a picture of a Ram will be displayed when they cross the stage.

Seniors - make sure to get all your Senior fees paid prior to graduation. You will not receive your diploma until all fees have been cleared. Senior fine lists are posted by the Bursar's Office & Attendance Office.

POCATELLO SUMMER TRANSPORTATION FOR TEENS

Pocatello Transportation and Idaho Central Credit Union have teamed up to provide Summer Bus Passes at no cost for anyone 18 and younger for the summer. You can pick up your summer bus pass starting May 13th at the Pocatello Regional Transit, Community Rec Center, Ross Park Swim Pool, Portneuf Library, or Marshall Public Library.  Bus rides go from May 28 through August 31st.
