ISU ACADEMIC SIGNING DAY
Idaho State University came to Highland on Tuesday for their annual academic signing day. Similar to an athletic scholarship signing, Seniors who have received scholarship money to Idaho State University are recognized for their academic achievement and sign a letter acknowledging they are offered a scholarship. Over 200 of our approximately 355 potential graduates are being offered a combined total of over $4 million dollars in scholarships from Idaho State University! This is amazing and we are so proud of our students and so grateful to Idaho State University for recognizing and rewarding their hard work.

=========================================================================
ISAT and SAT TEST DAYS COMING UP
On April 3rd Juniors will be taking the ISAT Test at Highland and on April 10th Juniors will then be taking the SAT Test. All other students, Freshman, Sophomores' and Seniors will not attend school on those days. They will be assigned school work through google classroom, a virtual day.

ISAT Information
Juniors will take their needed ISATs on Wednesday, April 3rd.  Below is some important information for you and your HHS student.
  • This is a graduation requirement for Juniors.
  • Lists are posted outside the counseling center and in many teacher classrooms with student room assignments.  They can also talk to their counselor if they don't know their assigned room.
  • Students are allowed to leave after the required testing is completed.  Buses will be running their regular routes if they need to stay at school until the end of the school day.
  • Testing will be done on the student's Chromebook. They will need to bring a CHARGED Chromebook and charging cord.
  • Students will need earbuds.  They are allowed to bring their own as long as they are NOT Bluetooth.  If you don't have any, some will be provided.
  • Calculators, cell phones, and smart watches are not permitted to be with your student during testing.  They can be kept in a personal bag in a designated location in the room students are testing in.
  • It is important students are ON TIME to school that morning!
SAT Information
This will be the first digital test version of the SAT administered at HHS. Students MUST bring a charged chromebook that day. Room assignments will be posted in the hallway at the end of the week.
We will be conducting checks during TA to ensure that all of the Chromebooks have the updated version of the program, Bluebook,  that is needed for the exam  on them next week.

All juniors have been preemptively registered for this exam. This is because, while it is no longer a graduation requirement to have a college entrance exam, if a student is planning on furthering their education in a collegiate setting it is a good idea to take one as they are still used as placement exams for required courses and for some scholarships. However, that being said, there are some students who have a conflict because of the Construction Combine. Each Junior, with the input of their parents, needs to make a decision on how important taking the SAT may be to their future goals and plans and if they need to take the test or not. Please call the school if you need any guidance or if you have any questions.

COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISORS

Folks,

Below are thanks and a couple of items for your calendar. Daylight savings is here

already. The rest of the school year will go by in a shot. Pay attention to this blog for all

the important info.

Higher Ed + Day was a Hit !

Kudos to the junior class who participated in our Higher Ed + Day last Friday, March 8 th .

There were 15 different sessions to meet the interests of just about every student. Fully

one-half of the junior class attended all three sessions of their choice, and three-

quarters of the class attended at least one session. Looking ahead, thinking, asking,

planning, researching: a recipe for success. Many thanks to the faculty and staff at

Highland who were patient while 300 students circulated through the halls at odd times.

All-School FAFSA Night – Thursday, March 14th

Jenni Kimball from the Idaho Office of the State Board of Education will be here in

Pocatello this Thursday, March 14th , to help any all students (or older siblings or other

family members) get their FAFSAs done in time for the March 31st deadline for State of

Idaho scholarships. It will be held in the cafeteria at Pocatello High School, starting at 6

pm. This is yet another great opportunity to get this important document completed.

Remember:

  • Create your FSA ID ahead of time. You’ll need your own S.S. # and the date of birth for any parent / guardian you receive support from. If you are older and doing a FAFSA, you will need the S.S. # and date of birth of your spouse. If you earned standard W-2 wages in 2022, you could bring those but hopefully won’t need them. If you are a small business owner, self-employed, own a farm or a ranch, best to bring your 2022 taxes with you. A student’s fully charged Chromebook and a fully charged cell phone should do the trick. Just ask the CCAs if you want some help preparing for FAFSA Night.

Tech Expo – Thursday, March 14th

On Thursday, March 14th , Idaho State University will be hosting its annual Tech Expo.

Held in Holt (oops, ICCU) Arena, this year’s Expo, will have more than 70 displays and

booths related to education and career opportunities in the tech areas. Students will

depart school at 11 am, and leave to return to school at 12 noon. This is valuable

exposure to Idaho’s impressive array of industries and career fields related to

technology. Watch this blog for more information in the weeks ahead because there are

only 40 slots for Highland students.

Students will need

1) permission to be absent from their 2nd and 3rd hour teachers,

2) permission from their school counselor, and

3) will sign up with the CCAs. To learn more about Tech Expo on ISU’s website, go to:

https://www.isu.edu/techexpo/ .

ISU Signing Day – Tuesday, March 26th

Watch this blog for more information about the annual ISU Signing Day event. It will be

Tuesday, March 26th , here at school. Senior students who plan to enroll at ISU will be

honored and recognized during this morning gathering that celebrates the

accomplishments and ambitions of our graduating seniors. Parents, families, and

supporters are invited to join us for cheer and celebration. More details will follow.

Scholarships, Scholarships, Scholarships

Seniors, apply, apply, apply to scholarships, scholarships, scholarships. February,

March, and the first half of April are prime times to be making and submitting

scholarship applications. The CCAs are emphatic in their plea that seniors apply to all

the scholarships that might marginally apply to you. If you have been accepted to a 2- or

4-year college, apply to scholarships on those school websites, and then look farther

afield. Some scholarship research tips:

  • Use an incognito window.
  • Who do your parents / guardian work for? See if they offer scholarships to the children of employees.
  • Do you have a special talent or activity – music, art, hiking, yoga, childcare? Google those skills and talents and see if there is scholarship money.
  • If you have a specific career goal – the health professions, teaching, history – look up the professional organizations for each and query “college scholarships.” For example, I just typed in “Occupational Therapy College Scholarships,” and I found the Wise Scholarship, scholarships aligned to specific colleges, and a link to AMBUCS (not sure what that stands for, but they have scholarships, so hey, we’re looking into it).

Enjoy your spring break. Be safe. Rest up. Take a load off. Buckle up for the second

half of the trimester, baseball, track, softball, and all the good stuff around graduation.

Your friendly neighborhood CCAs,

Alice Rowe

Sarah May Clarkson

TRIMESTER 3
It is crazy that we are already in our 3rd Trimester of the school year. The final trimester is always a busy and fun trimester with spring sports and activities, state and SAT testing, Make-A-Wish, Prom, Senior activities, and so much more. Keep an eye on the calendar and newsletter for upcoming events. Especially with spring sports and the changes that will occur because of mother nature. We are so proud of our students, how resilient they are and what inspiring examples they are. Despite the trials and adversity they have faced, they have come out stronger. We are so proud of our students and our school. Being a Highland Ram is being resilient. Here is a video our student government put together to celebrate what has been an awesome year so far.

7:30am-4pm both days at the Home Depot Parking Lot in Chubbuck.

Inspired by the NFL draft, the Construction Combine allows trainees to demonstrate their skills and learn new ones. They meet with local contractors and could possibly get hired for a job.

  • Day 1: Training sessions cover framing, concrete, electrical, plumbing, drywall, flooring, siding, and welding
  • Day 2: New skills will be demonstrated by building sheds with area contractors. The sheds will be donated to local disabled veterans.

Applications are open Jan 2 - March 22, 2024. To apply: constructioncombine.org  or scan the QR code found on the posters hanging around the school.

4-year college, apply to scholarships on those school websites, and then look farther

afield.

The spring is an exciting, hopeful season. We look forward to seeing all our

stakeholders achieve and succeed.

Thanks,

Alice Rowe
