This is the last newsletter for the 2023-24 school year. We are so proud of our students this year. Their resilience has been inspiring. We are excited for our Seniors. We are sad to see them go and we will miss them, but we are also excited for the adventures and growth they now face. They are an amazing group and they will do great things because they are great! At the same time we are excited to receive a new group of students, our incoming freshman. The cycle continues. 

Students, plan on picking up your schedule and paying any fees you may have for the 2024-25 school year on August 7th & 8th from 8am-1pm and 4pm-7pm at Highland. 

Freshman Orientation is scheduled for August 20th at 7pm. More details to come. 

The first day of the school for the 2024-25 school year is Wednesday, August 21st.

Summer Strength and Conditioning: A successful season begins now, in the off season. Sign up to do strength and conditioning training this summer at Highland for only $40 for the whole summer. Contact the bursar, Mrs. Huelsman, huelsms1@sd25.us, to sign-up. Start date is June 10th.

Make sure chromebooks, cases, and chargers are checked in along with textbooks the week of 5/20-5/23/23 @ the students Home Room.


Graduates, you need to pick up your seating assignment for graduation from the front office before Thursday 5/23. Once you have picked it up, please take a picture of it in case you lose the paper.

Graduates, submit your photos to the Senior Slideshow to be shown at graduation. Please send videos and photos to Highland_2024 on Instagram through a direct message.


The Senior All Night Party is at outer limits the night of graduation from 9pm-3am. Tickets are now on sale. $50 a person includes food, laser tag, and more. Buy your ticket now in room B68.

Graduates can pay their fees and pick up their diploma from the Highland Registrar @ Highland 9am-12pm on Tuesday 6/4/24 and Wednesday 6/5/24. 

Class of 2024, you have until June 10th to request a final transcript without getting charged. After June 10th it costs $5. Every student going to college will need a final high school transcript sent to that college before their enrollment begins.

GRADUATION DRESS & CONDUCT

A great resource for all information pertaining to graduation is found on the district webpage.

Just a reminder about Graduation Dress Code and Conduct from school district policy. 

Graduation is a formal academic occasion and should be viewed as such in dress and demeanor. The dress and conduct code for graduation is as follows:

  • Graduates are required to wear caps and gowns to participate in the graduation ceremony.
  • Clothing must be appropriate for school, in accordance with the school's dress code policy and must be worn underneath the gown. Be neat in your appearance.
  • Native American students who are members of a federally recognized tribe may wear traditional cultural and religious items inclusive of an eagle feather, and beaded items such as a necklace or medallion during graduation ceremonies.
  • Caps (mortarboards) must be worn flat on the head with the edges parallel to the floor, rather than angled toward the back or the side. Caps will not be thrown during the ceremony. No decoration or writing of any kind is to be placed on the mortarboard with the exception of tribal beading around the edge of the mortarboard for federally recognized Native American students.
  • Only approved cords and hoods in recognition of scholastic achievement and military designation may be worn over the gown.
  • Sunglasses are not to be worn.
  • Gaudy or excessive jewelry is prohibited. Minimal jewelry, scarves and/or ties may be worn under the gown.
  • Graduates should not carry flowers, cameras or anything else during the commencement ceremony.
  • Talking or other verbal communication should not distract from the graduation. Eating or drinking during the ceremony is prohibited.
  • Graduates who do not follow the dress and conduct code as outlined above, may be removed from the line-up at the administrator's discretion.

BAND, COLOR GUARD, CHOIR, & ORCHESTRA
Highland specialty show choir, Trouvere's, will be holding auditions virtually, online, after school is out. Please contact the choir director, Mr. Scherer scherebr@sd25.us, for specific information.

 
Highland Orchestra will be holding their last concert of the year on Thursday, 5/23,24, at 7pm at Century High School. 

Highland Marching Band will be holding a camp June 3rd-June 7th for all of those interested. 


Highland Color Guard will be holding a summer camp. Monday, May 20th, there is a meeting at 3:15pm in Room C39 for all those interested. Camp is June 3rd-7th.

SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION
Students who will be attending summer school DO NOT need to hand in their chromebooks and chargers. Summer school registration, for those who are not registered or who are paying with cash, is on Wednesday 6/5/24. Summer school starts on Friday 6/7/24 and runs until 7/8/24. There is no summer school on Wednesday 6/19 & Thursday 7/4 for National Holidays. Please contact your school counselor or Mrs. Prescott prescoam@sd25.us (summer school principal) with questions.

COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISORS
Highland Students and Families,

Small-Town; Rural Students (STARS) College Fair: May 21 in Pocatello
Sophomores and juniors, look in your Google classrooms! There is a network of college
admissions counselors who look to recruit students from small / rural towns. Idaho is
fortunate to have a broad array of post-secondary options, but if you are considering
East Coast colleges, private colleges, flagship or research universities in other states,
please MARK YOUR CALENDAR. On Tuesday, May 21st , from 6 to 8:30 pm, at the
Mountain View Event Center in Pocatello, there will be admissions reps from 20
different colleges, including Brown, Barnard, Case Western, Tufts, Rice, University of
Notre Dame, University of Wyoming, and Yale, among others. The STAR network of
counselors is offering a rare opportunity to talk to college staff from these far-flung
colleges and universities. Check it out!

Juniors – Looking Ahead, Think about Scholarships, Financial Aid NOW
Prestigious, national scholarships – some are general; some are directed to certain
populations of students (STEM, first-generation, high-achieving, minority) – are
available (often with lots of money) to high school juniors. But those scholarships have
1) extensive applications, and 2) early deadlines.
Talk to the CCAs before you leave for the summer if you think you might want to pursue
some of these opportunities. We can give you some information, the names of some of
these scholarships, some websites, and some things to consider over the summer
months.

Intent to Enroll = Seniors
Planning to attend any college, university, or training program this fall? Please please
please let your college know you Intend to Enroll – for all kinds of important reasons: it
saves your place in a class, you get notified about new-student orientation, you are told
about housing options, and you establish a school account where important information
can be found. On the website of the school you plan to attend, type in “intent to enroll” in
the search bar and do as instructed about your next steps. It is our advice that seniors
make a college or training decision by May 15th .
If you have applied to, and been accepted at, Idaho State University, you will go here:

Bengal Bridge = Seniors
Bengal Bridge is a terrific summer bridge program offered at Idaho State that occurs
over 7 weeks in June and July. Students can earn up to 9 college credits that chip away
at general education requirements at a fraction of the usual per-credit cost. Students
get an important introduction to college, make a soft landing, make friends, become
familiar with campus / staff / resources. Follow the URL below for more information. But
don’t delay; the deadline to apply will close soon. The CCAs can tell you more about
Bengal Bridge if you have any questions.

Know When Your Orientation Is = Seniors
If you plan to attend two or four years of college or training, BE SURE you know when
your new-students orientation is. Some colleges will have orientations throughout the
summer (ISU’s first new-student orientation is May 8!) and some will have a new-
student orientation right before the start of school. In order to make a strong and smooth
transition to college, is it important to fully attend a new-student orientation. Please do
your homework to find out when yours is.

Ordering your College Transcripts for Transfer Credit
If you have earned dual credits during high school, it is important that you send official
transcripts to your college of choice so that those credits can be evaluated and added to
your college transcript.
If you are attending ISU, and you earned dual credit through ISU, they already have
your classes and your grades. If you earned dual credits through ISU, but you are
attending elsewhere, you need to have your ISU transcripts sent for evaluation.
Here’s the deal.
 You will need a credit or debit card.
 You will need to know either your student ID # for the college where you earned
dual credit or you have to know your full Social Security number. Or both.
 You will go the National Clearinghouse, the Transcript section. Look for the
spinning tree. It is a HUGE website, so please follow this URL:

 You want to order and have transcripts sent when grades are posted.
Just visit the CCAs if you have any questions.

Plan to Defer? = Seniors
Some seniors have been accepted to college or training, and plan to attend, but need to
defer because of military enlistment, necessary medical care, or religious service. If
your situation is thus, please inquire about deferral policies. Some colleges / training
programs in Idaho ask you to fill out a simple online form; other Idaho colleges will not
defer and you’ll have to reapply ☹. At any rate, be sure that the college or training
program of your choice knows that you will be deferring your start date. If you are at all
unsure about what is needed, just call the Admissions Office – or stop by and ask the
CCAs.

POCATELLO SUMMER TRANSPORTATION FOR TEENS

Pocatello Transportation and Idaho Central Credit Union have teamed up to provide Summer Bus Passes at no cost for anyone 18 and younger for the summer. You can pick up your summer bus pass starting May 13th at the Pocatello Regional Transit, Community Rec Center, Ross Park Swim Pool, Portneuf Library, or Marshall Public Library.  Bus rides go from May 28 through August 31st.
