COLLEGE CAREER ADVISORS
In Praise of Advanced Opportunities
Just a brief word here to endorse the state of Idaho’s program known as Advanced Opportunities.
Your student may bring home a permission form that gives him or her permission to use state monies and participate in the Advanced Opportunities program. That permission form gives your student, and every Idaho public school student, $4,125 with which to enhance and strengthen their school experience. Those monies can be used for workforce training (to become a CNA, an EMT, a welder, and more), they can be used for testing and professional certifications (through Adobe, MicroSoft, Southwest Airlines, etc.), and for dual credit classes offered through Idaho State, College of Southern Idaho, and others. The URL that follows below takes you directly to the state board of Education's website that explains Advanced Opportunities. We hope students and families will take advantage of all the possibilities that open up because of this program.
The college career advisors are happy to answer any questions.

BYU-I Visits Highland – Tues., Dec. 5th
Our admissions representative from BYU-Idaho, Jarred Brandt, will be visiting Highland on Tuesday, December 5th, during the 2nd and 3rd instructional hours (from about 10 am to 12:30 pm). If your student is interested in BYU-I, has questions about the academic programs or campus life, or would like assistance in completing the application, then mark your calendar.
Students need to have the permission and endorsement of their teacher(s) to be out of class (strong attendance, no missing work, prepared to make-up any work they might miss).
Jarred will also provide guidance regarding the BYU Grant process (financial aid / scholarships).
So mark your calendar:

FSA ID / Scholarship / Financial Aid Night – Wed. Dec. 6th
Students and families, if you are planning to attend college, training programs, apply to state-sponsored or other scholarships, then you will need to complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). But . . . whoa . . . the FAFSA is being revised and improved and will not be released until next month (December 2023).
Before the FAFSA can be started, first the student and a guardian must create an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid Identification). We want to help facilitate this first step in the process. Mark your calendars for the days and time below. In order for everything to go smoothly, the student or the student and guardian will need to bring:
> Social Security number for student and the guardian
> School-issued Chromebook
> Both need easy and complete access to a personal email address
All the details:
FSA ID / Scholarship / Financial Aid Night

Apprenticeship-Plus Night: Thurs., Nov. 30th
Second year in a row! After the great success of Apprenticeship-Plus Night in 2022, this event is back and open to students and families. More (and better) than an exclusive apprenticeship event, this will feature local employers, state agencies, non-profits, and organizations of every kind and size.
Again, mark your calendars. More information will follow from your school, the school district, and on various media platforms. Be there:

Seniors: Apply Idaho / Scholarship Idaho ? ? ? ?
Seniors, have you completed your applications to training programs or 2- or 4-year colleges? Even if you plan a year or two of service after graduation, we strongly recommend that students complete such applications in their senior year because it is easy to defer your admission. The college career advisors stand ready to assist students in completing the Apply Idaho platform (for Idaho colleges and programs) or will help with out-of-state applications.
Likewise, Scholarship Idaho is a State Board of Education platform from which students can apply to the generous scholarship programs that the state of Idaho offers. The deadline for state of Idaho scholarship applications is March 1, 2024.
The college career advisors are here to help, to encourage, to answer questions, to help with post-graduation research, and more.
