Homecoming week was lots of fun with several events throughout the whole week for students to enjoy. Thank you student leadership for planning it all out and all the hard work you did to make it happen. It was a great week! Our teams had a great week and lots of success in Marching Band and Color Guard, Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Swim, Freshman Football, JV Football, and Varsity Football.

BLACK & BLUE BOWL
This week is Black and Blue Bowl week. We have another home football game at the end of the week versus cross town rival The Pocatello Thunder at Highland Stadium on Friday at 7pm. Come cheer on our Rams!

PARKING AT FOOTBALL GAMES
This is a reminder that if you park illegally you will get towed and it is an automatic $300 fee. Please park legally and please do not park in the fire lane or at the end of a row where there are no parking spots. There is parking available at the fairgrounds, in front of the school, and in the north parking lot as well as in legal parking areas along the streets around the school.

HIGHLAND CHEER CLINIC PRE-6th GRADES
Highland Cheer is holding a Clinic for Pre-6th grades on October 4th. Cost is $55 and includes headband, dinner, training, and 2 tickets to the game where they will perform.  Register here at this link... HHS Cheer Clinic

    SHOSHONE-BANNOCK INDIAN DAY ACTIVITIES
    Shoshone-Bannock Indian Day Activities coming up this week on Friday September 27 & Saturday the 28th. On Friday the 27th there will be a free BBQ along with Indian Day Royalty and on Saturday the 28th a parade, games and a POW-WOW.

    FCCLA will be having our first meeting in room C27, Mrs Quayle’s room, Wednesday September 25th during lunch. Come see what it is all about. Pizza will be served to those who join!

    COLLEGE & CAREER ADVISORS
    Seniors, we have colleges coming to visit us in the days ahead. Boise State will be here Wednesday, September 25, from 11:30 to 1:30 in B-18 (Ms. Plato’s room). Students need teacher permission to attend. Our admission rep for BSU will answer your questions about application, admission, housing, programs, and much more. On Thursday, September 26, Idaho State Univ will be here all day presenting to Ms. Fleischmann’s classes (B-04). Any interested person may speak to our admissions person (with teacher permission) during the 2nd hour (9:52 to 11:07). We are very lucky to have colleges visit us, so please DO take advantage of these opportunities.

    Juniors and seniors, have you seen the invitation to attend the Portneuf Valley College / Life Fair in your Google classrooms? It is Monday, October 14th, and we will take students by bus to and from the event. Students need to sign up because space is limited. Please go to the Google classrooms or stop by to talk to the CCAs in C-36.

    SOPHOMORE PSAT EXAM-OCTOBER 23rd

    The PSAT exam is on October 23rd. All Sophomores are signed up to take the test by the District Office.

    If you are a Junior and would like to take the PSAT to qualify for National Merit or to prepare for the SAT that is given; in the spring, you will need to sign up in the Junior Counseling Center Google classroom (ljnspeq) and complete the form to request an exam or you may use the following link

    As mentioned before, the benefits of taking the exam include an opportunity to become familiar with the content and testing process for the SAT. When testing results are utilized, they provide students feedback on their academic strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities to explore career interests, access college searches and help with placement for training or college programs.

    BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA CLUB
    If you are interested in joining the Business Professionals of America(BPA) Club, they are having an opening social on Monday September 30th from 5:30-6:30pm at the PV-TEC Building. There will be games, fun, and treats.

    CLASS OF 2025 IMPORTANT EVENTS
    For parents of graduates and graduates, class of 2025. We keep a live google doc that is updated each week with all the dates and information important for graduates to know. Please review it and use it a resource to find out anything important pertaining specifically to the Class of 2025. Reach out to Principal Wallace with any additional questions. 

    We have a Class of 2025 Group Photo taking place at 11:30am on Wednesday 9/25 at the Highland Stadium. This will be the only group photo, no retakes.

    Tomorrow is Constitution Day and part of our instructional time in classes tomorrow will be spent on the Constitution of the United States of America.

    NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALIST
    Congratulations to Trevor Lintvedt who was recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. This is an amazing accomplishment and we are so proud of Trevor and the hard work he has put in to be recognized. He exemplifies what it means to live the RAM Attitudes. Congratulations Trevor!

    JOHN MCCARTHY MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT-
    LOOKOUT CREDIT UNION & COLE CHEVROLET
    A huge thank you to Lookout Credit Union and Cole Chevrolet for putting on the John McCarthy Memorial Golf Tournament this summer. This brought in $33,000 split between Highland, Century, and Pocatello High Schools. We greatly appreciate this support that has a major impact on helping fund our extracurricular programs.

    HIGHLAND HOMECOMING WEEK
    Homecoming week is here. We are excited for a fun filled week and for our football team to finally play at home. Thank you to student leadership who has worked hard to plan a great week. Homecoming dance tickets are now on sale in the Bursar’s Office. Tickets are $20 each. The dance will be this coming Saturday, September 21st from 8:30pm-11pm here at Highland. Tickets at the door are $5 more so buy them now. Our Homecoming Assembly recognizing our Homecoming Court will be Friday afternoon. The bell schedule is provided below along with a calendar of the activities for the week.

      TANNER CLARK ASSEMBLY
      Pocatello/Chubbuck School District #25 in conjunction with the Kind Community are sponsoring a guest speaker that will come speak to students in an assembly on Thursday 9/19/24. Tanner Clark is an international motivational speaker who has spoken to thousands of high school, middle school, and elementary school students to help them find their One Second of Strength to ditch their digital devices, reconnect in real life, and embrace their self-worth to reclaim their happiness.

      Plan ahead now for a STEM DIPLOMA DESIGNATION

      The Idaho Legislature passed a bill allowing for a STEM designation to be included on a student’s high school diploma.  Students who successfully complete all graduation requirements established by the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District may receive a high school diploma designated as a STEM diploma if they meet the following criteria:

      ·         Complete eight (8) credits in mathematics

      ·         Complete eight (8) credits in science

      ·         Complete five (5) additional credits of the student’s choice in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.


      Seniors who are interested in applying for the STEM diploma designation can see the Registrar for an application.  Applications must be completed and returned to the Registrar prior to May 1, 2025. All students who qualify for the STEM designation will receive a seal on their diploma, notation of designation on their final transcript, cords to wear at graduation and the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 scholarship. 


      STEM Diploma Scholarships: OPENS: February 10, 2025 - DUE: April 6, 2025 Award Notifications: May 5, 2025

      They are starting demolition of the remaining parts of the school that were impacted by the fire including the old wrestling room and welding shop. Students who are walking by the north parking lot, by the Tennis Courts to the bus stop, to Gateway building, or crossing the street to Seminary, please, be alert and careful. A dump truck full of debris cannot stop on a dime. If you see it coming, please let it pass before continuing along or crossing the street. Please stay safe. 

      Our amazing school board of trustees and district administration have been hard at work along with a committee of administrators, teachers, Highland parents, and community members in planning and designing the rebuild of the parts of Highland High School that was burned down. The goal is that the new areas for rebuild will be opened for the 2027-28 school year. Please contact Principal Wallace with any questions or concerns.

      POCATELLO KIWANIS & SILVER CREEK GIVES DONATIONS HELPS HIGHLAND STUDENTS
      Highland received a donation of $1500 from the Pocatello Kiwanis Club for helping students in need from the school. We are very appreciative of this support. Several students have already benefited from this donation impacting their life in positive ways. Thank you again to Pocatello Kiwanis Club for you support of Highland students. 

      Silver Creek Gives also provided a donation of $500 focused on helping with the school pantry that have food, clothing, and hygiene supplies for students in need. Thank you Silver Creek Gives that includes Silver Creek Realty Group Realtors, Silver Creek Realty Group Owners, the Doughty Family, and their Title Company Affiliates-Pioneer, Flying S, and AmeriTitle. Thank you for your support and care of Highland students.

      A FOCUS ON CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
      Highland uses several different areas of feedback that help drive decisions for improvement. One of those areas is data. Attached here is a sheet of data that Highland keeps and reviews regularly to identify areas that need focus for improvement. Please reach out to Principal Wallace if there is an area of data that you think would be beneficial for the school to collect that could impact improvement. To review all the data, please click on the different tabs provided.  

      Highland also has a Parent Advisory Group that meets once a month to help drive improvement. This group starts meeting today. The agenda and minutes from this team are found in a link to the right under the heading Highland Parent Advisory Group Agenda/Minutes.

      Highland also has a Building Leadership Team. This team is made up of the schools department chairs, some additional teachers, counselors, media specialist, student leadership advisor, and school administration. This team also meets monthly and the agenda and minutes from their meeting along with members of the team can be found in the following links found in the right column of this newsletter:

      EXTRACURRICULARS'
      Congratulations to Varsity Football. They are off to an amazing 3-0 start beating 2 teams from Nevada and a team from Oregon. This Saturday they play at Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene at 11am. 

      Please check the Highland Athletics and Activities Calendar for the most up-to-date schedule of events.

      Homecoming week is scheduled for September 16-September 21st with the Homecoming Football Game at Highland Stadium versus Thunder Ridge High School on Friday September 20th.

      ATTENDANCE MATTERS
      Each week we will pose some common challenges and questions we face with attendance and provide answers. 

      This week we will examine attendance at other buildings or in other programs outside of Highland High School. 

      Attendance for students who travel to Calvary Chapel for Band, Orchestra, or Choir is taken and recorded by Highland High School. Attendance for students who travel to ISU, PV-TEC, or even Seminary are not taken nor recorded by Highland High School. Each of those organizations keeps their own attendance records. These organizations are separate from Highland High School. For questions about attendance at ISU, PV-TEC, or Seminary, you must contact those organizations directly. Highland cannot help with attendance at those facilities.
